"[Due to a degenerative hip] I spent four years limping in pain. I could only
walk about one block. I remember feeling vulnerable having to use crutches and
sometimes a wheelchair. One day I was in a sports store. I saw a kayak. It was a
chance thing. I asked about it and sat in it in the store. It hurt at first, but
I took a risk. I bought it. I found that I liked kayaking as much or more than
any activity I have ever done. Even better than hiking. I can do it every day.
It is beautiful and peaceful. Kayaking has brought me physical and spiritual
release."
Climbing out of a crisis can require Herculean effort, physically and
emotionally. We need to be tough to counter inertia and passivity. We must make
our move against victimhood. Bout how can we leave our inner 'victim' behind in
the dust? Only by summoning energy and then stepping into the future will we
find the next best stage of our life. There is life after loss. But we are
required to act. It's about movement, and nothing gets done without it. Consider
these, the wise words of our 16th President, Abraham Lincoln: "I am a slow
walker, but I never walk backward."
Together, we are not alone. Together, we can be more. Together, surviving hapens.
No one is better equipped to change the world than those scarred by what's wrong with it
